Growing with Gold: An Interview with Boss Plant Sales

We recently sat down with Wayne Scott, the After-Sales Division Manager at Boss Plant Sales. With nearly four years at the company, Wayne shared insights into his role, the history of the business, and the impact of Gold on their operations. We explored how Boss Plant has adapted to industry changes, its challenges, and the future innovations they look forward to.

Can you tell us about the history of the business and how it got started?

Wayne: “Boss Plant Sales has been established for 12 years and was started by our Managing Director, Graham Stansfield. It grew out of the remnants of a company called Leach Lewis and has expanded from there. The business started in a small porta cabin on this site, and it’s now what you see today with more change and growth to come.”

Can you tell us more about the services and products you offer?

Wayne: “We are an official distributor of Kubota, Thwaites, Manitou, Bomag, Atlas Copco and Socomec, as well as other Construction equipment manufacturers. For both sales, service and parts.”

How has your industry evolved in recent years? How have you adapted?

Wayne: “Since I’ve been with the business, we have focused heavily on after-sales, before that the business had been very sales orientated. I joined Boss Plant Sales, alongside another Service Manager, and we both came from an agricultural background. Therefore, our initial industry knowledge had been primarily based on looking after the farmer and the end user. Because of this, I believe we bought in a new perspective, and it has changed the dynamics of the business.”

Can you talk us through your experience with Gold?

Wayne: “I’ve been using Gold for 18 years, I started at another Kubota dealer and then two dealers after that, who all used the system. From there, I moved to my current role, and I’d say part of the reason I successfully secured this role was because of my experience and knowledge of using Gold.

Gold is utilised industry wide, it’s well respected, and it delivers everything a sales-orientated company uses, as well as the after-sales and the account software needed.”

How easy is it to integrate Gold into your existing workflow?

Wayne: “It’s easy for me because I’ve always used it. This year we are upgrading to the new Cloud-based version, and we have the New Workshop Scheduler alongside a new dashboard in place. All these tools easily integrate into our workflow and make the process much more streamlined.”

When you are onboarding someone, how are you finding teaching them the system?

Wayne: “That’s probably the hardest bit. Everyone knows Gold is a great system, but getting your head around it is a unique exercise. However, once you pick it up, it becomes second nature. Recently, I know Ibcos has put a lot of effort into providing online training. We had a new employee who needed to learn the system, and those videos were very helpful. I find with Gold that the more you use it, the easier it becomes, and shadowing an experienced user is a great way to learn.”

What specific feature or aspect stands out to you the most?

Wayne: “The Catalogue stands out to me because having all partners and pricing readily available, helps us day-to-day. The New Workshop Scheduler and the new Diary System for the Workshop are also great. When we go to the new Ibcos Gold Cloud-based system, we will have a whole new way of working.”

How well-suited do you think Gold is for the construction industry?

Wayne: “It works incredibly well and provides all we need in one system. I came from an agricultural background where it was widely used. However, in construction, I think it is not quite as prolific. I feel it works well and could easily be adopted by more construction-focused businesses and utilised for progression within the industry.”

How well does Gold support the large volumes of machinery that you sell?

Wayne: “The Wholegood Module does exceptionally well. We are going to Doc Store now, which will give us more support and make a big difference for new machinery.”

What would you like to see from Gold in the future?

Wayne: “I’m looking forward to the new Gold interface as I’ve seen some of the samples of it and we are excited for what the future of Gold will look like.”
